Conservative Police and Crime Commissioner candidate for Avon and Somerset, Mark Shelford, has welcomed additional funding announced today (12 June) for charities helping those suffering domestic abuse.
"Domestic abuse is an issue I am particularly keen to see tackled vigorously across our communities. It is a hidden crime, but one which affects not just those directly abused, but also wider family members, including of course children.
"I am delighted by the Government announcement of extra funding for two charities who help families across our region: Julian House, based in Bath, covering much of South West) (www.julianhouse.org.uk) £23,313; and Missing Link, based in Bristol) (https://missinglinkhousing.co.uk) £20,824.
"I had personal experience of domestic abuse when I was young, and it had a profound impact on me. Sadly, cases in our region are on the rise. It’s one of the reasons, if I were to become PCC for Avon and Somerset, strengthening Police focus on this crime would be one of the areas I particularly champion."
